Show Season Has Begun
And it started with a BANG!
On March 25th, we had our first Wild & Wooly and if you were there you would have been amazed at the very fine looking horses. Not wooly at all! The show was a record, with 41 exhibitors for the day. We had horses of all sizes (BIG and small). What surprised me the most was the amount of spectators. (Now I just need to hatch a plan to turn those spectators into volunteers. Heh Heh) Speaking of volunteers, I personally want to thank everyone for their great team spirit for coming out and volunteering. Ahem, especially my new found announcer Jeremy from Zacharias LiveHaul and his beautiful wife Juanita for being our ring clerk.

I think overall everyone had quite a bit of fun! And Mission Horse Club is all about providing a safe and fun riding atmosphere. Hopefully this is just the first of a great show season for us. For more information on our other shows visit our schedule page.
Photos!
Andrea from Walker Park Media has graciously offered come and photograph most of our shows this season. You will see her around the ring, with her camera. She will make the photos available for us to purchase after the show. Photos are $5 a piece or 5 for $20. Which is in my opinion VERY affordable! And from the last show is any proof, she takes amazing photos!

You can check out the photos from last show here.

I do ask that do not use any photos that you have not purchased. Andrea donates her time, and to compensate her we pay a small fee for the photos. Trust me I’m sure she would rather be riding a horse than taking pictures of us riding.

Meeting this Thursday!
Its that time again. 7:30 pm Thursday at the Chamber of Commerce boardroom. Everyone is welcome to attend and it’s a great way to have your opinion heard. And as you know I’m always looking for more volunteers:)
Melissa Buckley Clinic
Don’t forget it’s May 12th. The morning is Showmanship and the afternoon is Trail. If you are interested in participating please email prorodeo@gmx.com and speak to Kelsey.

So we are now almost half way thru March – Show season is coming!

FIRST SHOW

First show is March 25th! We are still looking for a few volunteers! One more office person to help my dearest Debbie.. A whipper-in (aka In Gate) and a Ring Steward. Now don’t forget an individual member is required to do 10 volunteer hours this season to be eligible for year end awards. Last year we had tons of people who could have qualified but didn’t do their volunteer hours. PLUS this year we have a new system but you’ve got to let em know you are available. Simply come to the from office, get a slip pass it in in the afternoon to the kitchen so we can count your hours!

Don’t forget we have a High Point Award for the day at the Wild & Wooly..

WORK BEE!

Is this Saturday 9:00 AM get you butt out and help us get ready for the show.. We need to get everything spic and span before our show. There are a ton of us going already BUT we would LOVE some help.. And if you are there it counts for volunteer hours…

BINGO NIGHT

I almost forgot (don’t kill me Leslie!) . Bingo Night is an MHC Fundraiser. Buy a $5 coupon, and your $20 Bingo Card and come join us at Mission Chances Boardwalk March 23rd. Dinner starts at 530 and bingo starts at 630. Prebook your tickets only by emailing Leslie (hockeynhorses@live.com) or phone 604.226.5002.

SPONSORS

I’m a bit behind on welcoming our newest sponsors on board but I would like to thank, Zaharias LiveHaul, Hylee Training, Valley Pulp & Sawdust, Junction West Equine Transport, Bosley’s in Maple Ridge. Cummings Trailer Sales & Rentals, Abby Saddle Shop, Pete’s Pizza, Fraser Valley Building Supplies, Iron Lotus Yoga, Eagle Road Animal Hospital and WineKitz. Seems Leslie and her team were busy since the last newsletter. So thank you to ALL our sponsors without you we wouldn’t have a club.

Show Season

Show season is soon coming with our first show coming up March 25th with Virginia Allen. Now this show is a Wild & Wolly and what that means is it doesn’t matter what you are look like just bring your horse, yourself , helmet and pair of boots! The March show is a non point show, meaning any results do not count for year end awards. I’ve had numerous requests for the class list which will be available the 1st of March. I’m working the skin of my fingers off – to get it all ready. Remember that all MHC Members MUST have HCBC so if you don’t have your membership in – make sure you bring your Horse Council membership with you.

Interclub

Mission has decided to join the clubs, like Langley and allow riders who are members of other clubs ride at our member rate but they must show proof of membership of another local club.

Volunteers

Like any club, we need volunteers to run the show. The March show is looking for a ribbon person, out gate and in gate person and an office person and lastly an announcer! Remember that you do not have to be horsey to help out. I will gladly train anyone who steps up to the plate. So, if you are going to be there anyway then – you might as well join the fun and give a helping hand. You can also work off someone else’s volunteers hours. The shows do not run without help from everyone. A detailed description of the volunteer jobs can be found on our website. Please reply to this email if you’ve got sometime to volunteer!

Mighty Fraser Riders

MFR is having an open ride for people interested in joining our drill team March 11th 7 pm ag rec indoor (37420 Haida drive Abbotsford BC) contact is myself Kelsey Epton: 778 240 6649 prorodeo@gmx.com

Clinic with Melissa Buckley

So, we are planning a clinic with the infamous (opps I meant famous.) Melissa Buckley in the month of April/May. There will be two topics for this clinic, the morning will be Intro to Showmanship and the afternoon will be Intro to Trail. Now here’s the even better part – it will be free to members BUT you need to be a member of Mission Horse Club. I don’t know about you – but I’m already signed up! The date is still to be decided – feedback would be great on the date. So if you’re interested here’s the deal. You’ve got to send an email to Kelsey (MISS clinics this year!) at prorodeo@gmx.com with you name, HCBC number, year of birth, whether you would be an auditor or a rider, gender and hometown.

The Western Canadian Farriers Assoc is looking for your input

They are interested in finding out what we would like to have answered by a farrier. You can submit your questions via their website: http://www.wcfa.ca/ The top three questions will be part of the demo at the Mane Event this year.

Trails in Stave Falls – I little birdy called me today and was informing me of some great news about trails in Stave Falls. Apparently there is a joint project between the city of Mission, BC Hydro and Forestry Services on building some horse back riding trails on the west side of Stave Falls Dam. They also said there would be corrals, etc for overnight camping. The trails would have three entrances one on Bell, one on Pilgrim and the other on the forestry road that goes up towards Stave Lake Boat Launch. Now there is a supposed to be a meeting about it, an initial meeting has already been held but was not well advertised. I’ll keep you in the loop and will send out a date when I get one.

And lastly…

March 25th show is coming up.. I hope to see all of you there! Oh and if you are there anyway don’t forget to volunteer.

Memberships!

Don’t forget to get your memberships in. Memberships are due every year at the beginning. So get it in early…Forms can be found on the website.

Clinics

MHC was thinking of maybe hosting some clinics. BUT we need your feedback. It would be awesome if we could get some feedback on what type of clinic you would be interested in. Fill out our survey here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FK3FGKK

Show & Sponsorship

Our sponsor committee and show committee have been busy working on their programs. Most of the judges are booked! Show programs will be out in March. Countryside Stables already has theirs in – Thanks Dorothea!
And sponsorships are already rolling in.

Volunteers

Now volunteers are every organizations biggest challenge – hey who wants to work for free? Not me…. So we are looking for people who could be interested in volunteering this season. NOW remember you don’t have to be horsey to volunteer. We have a ton of positions in gate/out gate, ring clerk, announcer etc.. Training will be provided. This year we have a new system for the volunteers instead of the silly books… you drop your ballet with your hours signed by the Show Manager into a box! OH and it gets you a FREE (yes FREE) lunch. You can do your daughter’s, your cousin’s or your mom’s hours (I think you get my drift). If you are interested please reply to this email

Photos

Now there was a nice lady who took some photos for me at the Year End award but I can’t for the life of me remember who it was! If you’ve got some photos from the year ends, the christmas parade or from last season I’d love to have them! I know there are some pretty good photographers out there:)

Cheers,
Speaking of Christmas – did anyone check out the parade this Friday? If you happened to miss it. Check out the photo of the Mission Horse Club float on our website.
We have added Hunter days! Last year our Hunter days were so successful that we added some more! There are a total of 4 Hunter shows (3 then the Saturday Trophy show) this season and we have added some Hunter Year ends.

Rosalie and Margo

Rosalie, our long time past treasurer (I need to butter her up so she’ll still volunteer and Margo (she’s my new favourite horse but Rosalie won’t let me steal her) competed this season and placed second in their Preliminary Division. Please see the photos here on the website.

Did you and your horse do something cool you want to share with members? Send me your photos and information and I’ll include it in the next newsletter.

Sponsorship

Leslie and Tara are working very hard at getting the sponsorship program together. First thing in the new year they will be looking for sponsorships so, if you know anyone who would like to sponsor or who’s business could benefit, please let us know. You can contact them directly or just reply to this email and I’ll forward it on.

Volunteers

As a non profit club completely staffed with volunteers we are always looking for help (Begging might be a better word here..) This year in particular we will need some volunteers at the shows. Cooks, In and Out Gate, Ring Steward, etc.. For all our shows. Now remember you don’t have to be horsey to help! Be sure to email me(alicia@hyleetraining.com) or reply to this email to let me know we can use you this season or to inquire about volunteer opportunities.

Ideas from the Community

As most of the executive is pretty new to club, we are looking for some ideas of how the club could add value to their members. I would love to here your feedback on what you would like to see the club do in the next year? Some ideas I have heard are dressage shows, clinics etc.. Send me your ideas.

Year End Awards!

We had the year end award night this past month. Lots of people came out to support their club. I believe we had a approx. 40 people at Dakota Joe’s. Everyone loved their prizes. We also had a door prizes that we drew for and Dan St. Amand seems to me won most of them, including the very manly pink polos! Now, I haven’t received any photos from the Year End Awards so if you have some please send them to me! I have posted the winners on the website here. Helen’s note about the year end would be to make sure to attend THREE shows to qualify and complete your VOLUNTEER HOURS or else all your hard work goes to nothing!

And lastly, our next meeting

Is Jan 5th, 7pm @ The Mission Chamber of Commerce upstairs board room– Everyone is welcome!

Cheers,

President’s Message

Hello everyone,
Our season has come to a close with a little bit of a rough beginning, the weather this spring was less than nice. We had a change in the Executive part way through the season, but we all survived! Thank you to all who helped out at the club at shows work-bees etc. We had a work-bee last Sunday and managed to re-fence the side of the arena along the bleachers! It poured rain but spirits and determination were high and with the help of a great group of volunteers we got the job done!

Helen Howell, 2011 MHC President

AGM Tomorrow Night @ 7:30pm

Tomorrow night’s the night we all vote for our executive! This year many are stepping down so it’s time for us to step up. We are definitely going to need some additional volunteers this year. The following Executive positions are available: President, VP, Secretary and Treasurer. We also need some volunteers for some of our committees including Show, Membership & Sponsorship ( I know I’m missing something…but for the life of me can’t remember). Now remember that you don’t need to be horsey to help… and trust me there is job for everyone…The AGM tomorrow is at the Visitor’s Centre on Lougheed Highway. The meeting room is upstairs. Afterwards we have the rules meeting (ughhh… nobody likes rules do they?)

Year End Banquet Nov 17th

That’s right and we are giving away year end prizes. And trust me… they are good (too bad I didn’t show this year). On top of year ends, we will have door prizes, silent auction (bring something to donate) and of course GREAT FOOD & GREAT PEOPLE. The banquet this year is at Dakota Joe’s on First. And Helen says the food is fabulous.. If you could RSVP to Helen Howell @ martyeyes@hotmail.com and just let her know you are coming and with how many friends. This way the restaurant has an idea of how much room we need.

And lastly, a big thank you to our sponsors Fraser Valley Building Supplies & Abby Tack for the awesome deals on prizes so we were able to get bigger, better prizes

Last week’s work bee

Was a huge success despite the rain. The great crew of people (I don’t want to name names in case I forget someone) that came out was able to get the place cleaned up and the whole one side of fence up. Now we just need some (hint, hint fence fundraiser..) plaques to put on them. Pictures of the new fence will be posted on the website soon, which has also been updated

Facebook

Now don’t forget to join the Mission Horse Club Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/MissionHorseClub/) Ronalee & Tanya do a great job of posting all of the hot-off-the –press information there. Currently we have 123 members and we would like to see grow!

Sponsorship

This year we’ve got it a bit more together on the Sponsorship end. If you’ve got a business it’s a great way to get exposure. I know I’ll be in line for a sponsorship. Forms can be found on the website (http://missionhorseclub.com/sponsorship/sponsorship-program/). You can also read all about the sponsorship program we’ve got going this year there as well. The cool thing about sponsorship at MHC is that you can have a sign on the ring and it’s viewable by people year round! Leslie (hockeynhorses@live.com) is in charge of sponsorships and you can email her to let her know you’d be interested. She would be delighted to hear from you!

Thank you to our Sponsors!

It’s been a long year and we’ve had a blast this season but we couldn’t do it without the constant support of our community sponsors.. So a big THANK YOU to all. This year’s sponsors included: Abby Saddle Shop, Iron Lotus Yoga, Bosley’s Pet Food & Supplies, John son Meier Insurance, Soapbox Studios, Pete’s Pizza Place, Rosegate Dairy Farms, Glenda’s Christmas Cottage, Action Roofing, Betty McMahon, Prospera Credit Union, Valley Pulp, Buker Farms, Cummings Trailer Sales, Snug Rugz & Accurate Pressure Washing (boy, that’s a mouthful!) Now if I’ve forgotten anyone I’m new

Yep that’s right. It’s the end of the season… and the snow is soon to come… So we’ve got to get the MHC in shape and get everything put away for the winter. We will be holding the MHC close down and clean up party on October 30th at 10am.

And of course, the more people show up, the faster it goes. Please bring any rakes, shovels, hoes, hammers, gloves ect that you have. Don’t steal any from the neighbors tho We would love to see some new people out to help and we promise not to torture you too bad.

We will be installing the first new fence sections from our Fencing Fundraiser so if you have been wanting to purchace your section please let us know ASAP so we can buy enough boards and posts to get it installed this month for you! How cool is this? You can have a section of fence with a plaque in your name or in your horses name or in remembrance of family, friends or you favorite pony or advertise your business…on the MHC fence forever (or at least until it needs to be replaced again but seeing as this fence is over 30 years old, you will be famous for a long time!)

You can email any of the Executive to let them know you’d like yours added!

Hey Everyone,

I’ve got a very important reminder.

The next meeting is MHC’s AGM on November 3rd. We will be holding our Elections and then our Rules meeting which is, your ONLY opportunity for the year to change or add anything in the MHC rule book and to help the club out by volunteering for a position on the executive.

There are a ton of positions to be filled to make sure our club runs smoothly next year and with the majority of the executive stepping down this year, we will be in need of fresh faces.

The following are the positions available:

President

Vice President

Treasurer

Secretary

Newsletter Rep

Website Rep

Year End Awards Committee

Membership

Show Committee

Sponsor Committee

Now we’ve changed the format of the board this year to get people working together and not separate! We will now use the format of committees for the Show Committee, Sponsor Committee and the Year End Awards Committee because we thought these tasks are going to require more than once person! So if you’ve got a few hours to donate each month we would love for you to sit on one of our committees. If you love the Mission Horse Club and you would like to see it continue then we need your help.. AND you DO NOT need to have alot of horse experience.

The meeting will be held at the Mission Travel Information Center on Lougheed Hwy a@ 7:30pm on November 3, 2011. See you all there.
